Welcome to the Shanghai Japanese School

With around 1,000 students from primary to senior high school at each of the Shanghai Japanese School’s (SJS) two campuses, the kids that attend SJS are lucky to receive an intimate, individual approach to learning, which is expounded and shared by its over 140 faculty staff. The language of instruction is Japanese with both Chinese and English offered as second-language subjects.

This exclusive school is for Japanese nationals only, and teaches the Japanese national curriculum, in line with the high standards inscribed in Japanese law. Parents are reassured by the knowledge that all text books and methods are issued or approved by the Japanese central education authority. This ensures that students wishing to pursue higher education in Japan, or continue their grade education at one of the many Japanese international schools across the globe, in Japan, they will have been taught the high standards expected by these institutions.

Shanghai Japanese School has two campuses, one in Pudong and one in Hongqiao

The school was originally founded in 1987 as The Japanese Government General Consulate of Shanghai. While changing its name, it has continued to uphold the high standard of education it set out to offer to children of Japanese nationality, instilling in them a cultural awareness of their current surroundings while promoting pride and honor in Japan.

The Pudong campus on a 4,643 square meter site, while the Hongqiao campus is on a 8,727 square meter plot. SJS Senior High School is located on the Pudong campus.
