Moving to a new city is never easy, and getting the kids settled is a major part of any big move, right? If you are looking for a particular curriculum, offered by say an American school in Shanghai, don’t worry, there are plenty to choose from!
With over 24 million residents; that’s more than the top five U.S. cities combined, it will come as no surprise that there are plenty of international schools to choose from, which will suit all needs – locality, financial and social. As with private schools back home, you get what you pay for, and the international schools at the upper end of the fee scale have fantastic facilities – multiple gymnasiums, swimming pools and state of the art computer labs. But don’t dismiss the smaller schools, either. As with many things – size doesn’t always matter!
Find a suitable curriculum at an American school in Shanghai
As an expat, some of us will always have home at the back of our minds, especially when it comes to our kids. If you want your kids to return to America to complete their education at any point, especially for college, it is important that they follow the same education system. There are many international divisions in local schools. These schools often offer a much more intense language program — not to mention they are usually a cheaper alternative to a private American school in Shanghai – but when you visit, make sure that the school offers a suitable curriculum, otherwise you will have to arrange supplementary tests, such as the SATs, to ensure your kids can gain entry into college back home.
One negative thing about Shanghai is the traffic! I mean, you can’t have a city of this size and not expect traffic jams, especially during peak travel times, but this is a major concern when deciding on an American school in Shanghai, or any school for that matter. I mean, it is hard enough getting teenagers out of bed at the best of times, and if they have an hour’s drive just to get to school it is not going to help at all!
